3 keg fridge/freezer?

Post by CJR » Thu Feb 18, 2016 1:55 pm

Hi everyone,

I am looking for a fridge or freezer that will hold 3 Cornelius kegs on the inside with CO2 on the outside. I plan on running the beer through to a 3 tap font. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Many thanks,

Model isn't really important just dimensions, 3 can be put into a fridge I've seen some, but you would need on that has no freezer compartment, the other problem is the compressor step. If I were you I would measure the kegs you are using and go and visit Comet or some other white goods specialist with your tape measure. If you are going to punt new and can afford a freezer and the space they take up I would go for one of those, add a wooden collar for all the taps and pipes and that will suffice.

My kegerator is an old full height fridge freezer job (as this was an extra fridge that came with our house!) and holds 3 cornies comfortably. Because of the single compressor I can't easily use an STC to control the fridge temp without knackering the freezer so I just let it run at it's own pace. Normal temp seems to be 8C on the current setting, plus I can use the freezer for storing hops etc.
My under-counter fermentation fridge does have an STC fitted to it however because of the plastic moulded 'step' on the inside it would only hold 2 cornies - definitely something to look out for when choosing!

I can fit 3 cornies (just) and a 5kg gas cylinder on the compressor ledge in a small size chest freezer. I'll take a pic and measure it when I get out to the shed. I think chest freezers are much more space efficient for kegs than fridges.

Here's a pic of mine. Standard small size chest freezer (I think there is one "standard" size that is even smaller). 3 kegs are snug but comfortable, and a 5kg gas cylinder sits on the ledge. Collar extension required, but useful of course for plumbing the taps in:

External dimensions of this freezer are 73cm Wide x 60cm Deep.

Cheers Matt. Is a collar extension reasonably easy to build?

Yep - very easy. Just a few lengths of 6x2 in my case, with straight joins and gripfilled to the top of the freezer. Lid removed beforehand of course, and reattached to the collar. Would have been even easier if I didn't have to chisel angles on the inside to accommodate the lid, but the wood I'd bought was a bit too thick. Lot's of info online about these sorts of builds - probably the easiest style of kegerator/keezer build going. I got lucky as well and got my freezer from freecycle.

Max for un undercounter fridge is 2 1/2 cornies, i.e. 2 full size and 1 x 1/2 corny.

I use this in my Kegerator. I can do it as the Hotpoint RLA model used has a small compressor cover and I use a heat lamp rather than a bulky tubular heater.
