Cornelius Kegs What do I Need

Post by Vossy1 » Sun Jul 16, 2006 12:48 pm

Calling all cornie experts. I need a list of all the bits required from scratch, to set up a cornie keg.

I've been through the links posted by Daab and been on Jims own website. I've looked in the link shops and only 1 has a full set up minus the co2 bottle and thats the dubious shop in the U.S.A.

I'm possibly thinking of ordering from the German shop but need a list of equipment req.

I know I need a cornie keg (good start), dual regulator, piping (what size), dispensing tap, and various attachments ?

Help

Thanks DaaB, I've got in touch with Norm...awaiting his reply :D

I've just had a look at this link from one of you other posts DaaB,

http://www.thewelderswarehouse.com/acat ... _Gear.html

Is this the regulator I need, I'll buy one if so?

The 2047 imported by Southampton Welding Products, sold by John Davies, is fine. I thought a bottle pressure gauge would be a useful way to measure bottle contents. However, as far as I can tell, as long as there is liquid CO2 in the bottle, it'll maintain about 800 psi. It's only when the liquid is all gone that the gas pressure will start to fall, I think. Perhaps bathroom scales would be a better way to monitor bottle contents.

I wouldn't want to be without a single gauge, to measure keg pressure, though.

Taps: all taps I've bought have included a black (out) quick disconnect.

There are two types of keg: ball lock and pin lock. Most people go for one type or the other. Ball lock is by far the most common. Make sure you know which one you're getting.

No dicking around for me Daab :o

Thanks for all the help, I've just ordered a set from Norm ;)

I will need more help though...if I'm not pushing my luck too much :P

How do you rack your beer?
Do you force carbonate after primary fermentation in the cornie? Can you ?
Do you allow your beer to mature in a secondary and then transfer to the corny?

I have been thinking about a getting a corinie the past week or so and have been reading all the posts on cornies,
but was still a little unclear about what exactly was required.
Well this thread cleared that up no problem!
It is very clear and consise, i would consider making it sticky it really is spot on B)

Before this thread late last week i did e-mail Norm about a corinie set up and got no reply NOT even just a "Z"
Am i being ignored??
I did mention I was from the Jims Homebrew forum!
:(

IRM, give Norm another buzz. I'm not sure what the Z was all about, but he got back to me quickly when I told him about the Z ??? Probably woke him up with my e-mail lol :P
He's posting the cornie today can't wait to get it. Will report on receipt.

DaaB, How a bout a "Beginners Questions" pinned thread. I know we have a search facility, but it might prevent repetition of really basic questions from newbies like myself. As a beginner It would be the first place I looked!

Daab, thanks for all the invaluable info. I like the idea of your recent developement...I don't suppose you've got a spare black disconnect for sale?
I have a BruPaks Linthwaite Lite, started on Sat and this will be the cornies 1st visitor.

Gotta go, need to find a co2 source now

Going to re read your racking post DaaB and get back to you ;)

Edit, Just found a co2 source, 7kg bottle, £6 plus £10 deposit return..not too bad

Edit 2 price above should be £8.50, my mistake

Think I'll be trying the top method, when I lay my hands on some iodophor and my co2 bottle ;)

I've been reading the posts on cornies with interest as these seem to be the way forward for me too.

Silly question number 2

Once you have racked into the Corny, (my intention being to condition in a KK then try and rack to the cornie as bright as I can so I can move it around), can you remove the quick disconnects without loss of pressure / liquid from the barrel?

This would allow me to clean pipes and swap barrels on the home bar whilst kegs are still partly filled.

the cornie posts (gas and beer) seal when the disconnects are removed so no loss of CO2 or beer B)
