Brewometer

A bit expensive for just gravity and temp readings but how handy would it be to have instant gravity readings with no need to open the fermenter.

Cheaper than the "brewbug".

Bloody exspensive that is plus it fails to tell you how you'd change the battery. And if you can use it in celcius rather than farinext.

Also can the o rings be changed

Nice- good find! It claims good accuracy for the SG- it's a shame the accuracy of the temperature is poor (+/- 1C). I guess they didn't want to use a super accurate temperature sensor and risk raising the price point. Then again it would likely only add another £10 for it to be +/- 0.5C given the price of the cheap thermopen type devices sold by EFi.
What's a shame with these kind of devices is they just state accuracy and resolution but not drift. A result that is inaccurate but by a constant amount isn't a major problem, one that drifts around the true reading is more problematic...
Still rather tempting though :)

Interesting technique- measuring SG by the tilt

It looks like its built around a LightBlue Bean, which is probably providing the temp function (as it is built in to that). I wonder exactly how they are calculating the SG? I note that the bean has a built in IMU (attitude sensor) - I wonder if there is something clever going on whereby they can weight one end and calculate the SG from from the angle of the bean? If so, then its possible that the only hardware in that tube is an off-the-shelf bean and a battery, with a bit of programming behind it. Might be an interesting project..

Just read your post Ben - seems to confirm what I suspected, which is very interesting.. (hey - I just came up with that idea independently as well :) )

Yes, clever way to calculate the SG isn't it.

If it wasn't for the likely customs charges and the P&P I'd be tempted...

Would these work in a stainless steel fermenter, I wonder?

It looks like a very promising device =D> let hope there are a few reviews in the near future.

According to their blog it works.

Can't find an answer to the battery replacement question though.

Changing the battery is 'coming soon' on the about page.

As its a CR type battery (same as a thermapen) I'd presume that it goes in one of the ends of the cylinder

Well since it looks like all it is is a bean inside a carefully weighted plastic tube, with a bit of nifty software, you can get the answer to your battery question here. Just a single coin battery, I guess you slide the unit out the end and change it.

Makes sense. I guess that's why the app has a calibration function. As soon as you remove the seal to get at the battery, the air pressure inside will change voiding the previous calibration, as it will affect the angle of the tilt.

I am tempted I must admit.

I know there are several other out there using a brewometer, & having had mine for over a month now I finally got around to using it today.

To confirm they will work in a stainless FV (mine is fitted with a blow off tube). It is quite easy to change the battery, to get the end cap off just use a £shop rubber strap wrench, as the battery located on the centre of gravity a minor difference in battery weight wont cause a problem.

Once this ferment is finished I will most some pic of how dirty the thing becomes in use.

Overall so far very impressed & certainly seems easier to use than the load cell fishing line thing.

How much did it end up costing you Barney and did you get clobbered for courier admin fees for the tax?
I am really interested in being able to see what is happening with my fermentations to learn but it seems the BrewPI version of this may never happen and the Beerbug design may have issues with krausen, although this relies on on bluetooth and a tablet/phone I like the selaed design.
I wonder how easy it would be to add code to have the Raspberry PI part of a BrewPI setup pick up its output instead.
