Warning! Re: rinsing Corny keg with boling Water!

Post by IanRMartin » Mon Jul 24, 2006 11:47 am

I came to bottle and keg my first brew lat night.
I planned to bottle about 4Ltrs and keg the rest.

The bottling went fairly straight forward but washing and sanitising 8 bottles was a PITA how people have the patience to do 40 I will never know (Which is what I was planning to do, Thank god I got my corny in time!)

Now the kegging, after sanitising my corny with idophor there was quite a lot of bubbles as I had given it a good shake a few time to make sure it had got everywhere inside. I thought I would put some boiling water in and draw it though just to get rid of the bubbles and rinse the beer line and tap out.

After putting half a kettle of freshly boiled water in I put the lid on and pressurised the keg and pulled about half a cup of VERY hot water though, lovely I though I’ll leave it like that for a few minutes while I get ready to put the beer in, just as these thought were going through my mind the beer line developed a leak :( and VERY hot water started spraying out. My first reaction (And the wrong one) was to put my finger over to try and stop it spraying everything then another leak and a second lot of VERY hot water starts to spray out :( , by this time I had registered in my head that my hand was burning :bonk and just as I took it away and took a step back the beer line completely came off and all the VERY hot water came gushing out the john guest fitting (Where the beer line was) luckily it was not pointing directly at me  .
My wife came rushing out (It made one hell of a racket) telling me to keep it down, as our little one was a sleep, she saw me standing there half soaked and a little warm!

Luckily I was not seriously burnt in fact my hands feel fine this morning all the red marks have gone away so I count my self as very lucky ;) (I think the water must have cooled down quite bit probably the walls of the corny absorbing a fare amount).

Even more luckily was I had just happened to move the corny to the garage it had been in the kitchen! (Burns would have been mild compared to what I would have had to endure if it had happened in the kitchen :out )

Here is a section of the beer line:
Image

I cut this section off and tried to refit the end on the john guest fitting but the heat and pressure must have permanently expanded the line. Lots of cursing and chucking things about and another telling off for being to loud. I came up with a solution to save the day and my brew I had loads of gas line so I cut a small section off and fitted that the john guest fitting was no problem as it’s the same diameter as the beer line pipe how ever the tap end was a fare bit wider, the beer line was soft enough to just push on the gas line pipe would not. With more boiling water (You would think I would have learnt my lesson) I dipped about an inch of the gas line in for a few minutes then tired to push it onto the tap fitting it didn’t want to go still and the pipe was burning my already very sore hand more swearing and 5mins later it was done.

Everything else went OK transferred the beer pressurised no leaks no exploding pipes I even pulled a small glass off to taste, very flat but smelt and tasted good no off flavours so with a few weeks under pressure and a bit of maturing hope fully after all this I will have a very drinkable Beer.

Parting comment from my wife after all this:

“How about I give you an Ale Allowance that you can spend on beer, rather than all thisâ€

whoa. Nasty. Glad to hear you're not too badly hurt.

Pressurised hot water and beer lines obviously don't mix - I'll remember that. :D

I racked my brains trying to remember if i had ever read that you shouldn't or couldn't put boiling water though a beer line and i'm sure i never have!
As brewers if we rinse something quite often its with boiling water. I can't be the only person who has ever done this, can I  ?

Thats how i plan to do it next time, if SHMBO will let me do it all again ;)

All I plan to do in future is just let the water cool down down before i use it. As i don't like the idea of using cold water from the tap after going to all the bother of sanitising.

Glad to see your alright IRM. Thats 2 new cornie users with narrow escapes :o

Hopefully we can get some order to these topics to stop it happening to someone else ;)

A beginners "do not try this at home" section

We don't want the forums numbers to dwindle due to preventable mishaps do we :P

The dangers we face while in pursuit of "DaaB like perfection" are a small price to pay :P

Thats the great thing about the internet and online forums, you can be who you want to be.

Some how my true persona always comes out ;)
proably because of threads like this, i would be better keeping things like this under wraps.
But where is the fun in that :P

Now you are talking!

How about nailing floor boards down and putting a nail though a pressurised central heating system pipe :(

Not once but TWICE in the same week :bonk (They say learn from your mistakes, I was always a slow learner  )

QUOTE (Daft as a Brush @ Jul 25 2006, 11:42 AM) I also went through a stage of filling kegs and fermenters while leaving the taps open  hence I always check them first now (and have a mop handy just in case :P )
I still leave the taps open. I am hoping that one day I will remember to close them all before trying to swirl around the iodophor solution. There is enough cleaning involved without the added extra mopping up!!
