Cornie conversion with cask widge float

Post by bigtoe » Fri Jul 08, 2016 2:36 pm

Wanted to try this a while, i have 5 king keg top taps and like how the beer brights up and the float takes from the clear beer, read up on the cask widge floats and they look to do an even better job so decided as i move to cornies i would try one conversion and see how it does.

tube off ebay, 6mm id http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/230871607289? ... EBIDX%3AIT

cut the out tube so 25mm sticks thru below the lid of the cornie, sat the float on the end of the tube and give it a rough measure...if to long i can adjust it later ;) You just push the silicon tube onto the out tube all the way..its a nice snug fit.

Using the clear Pin floats from cask widge...load of room though.

Cool. I've always wanted to try this, but was worried the narrowness of the cornie would prevent it from working properly. Have you tried it with beer yet?

not yet BUT i already can see it will work well, the floats are small, the tube easy flexible enough.

This should mean I can drop from fermenter direct to cornie now instead of fermenter to king keg, condition etc, then transfer to keg later.

I have done this to mine. Got the red float and hose and works fantastic :)

I have one setup just the same and it seems to work really well.

Interesting - might have to pick one of the floats up! I reminded me that I heard an interview (on one the Jamil shows) with a guy who makes something similar, especially for cornies - I thought it sounded good at the time, but forgot all about it. I think it is this place.
What is the pickup like with this widget? How wide is the opening? One feature of the US version that sounds good is the ability to dry-hop loose in the keg (pellets, at least), knowing that the pickup is always at the very surface.

Its like a fine mesh filter...check the pics on the widge site to see close ups

Matt, I dry hop in the keg and have no problem with it picking up through the filter

I have used parts from the cask widge, just the tube and float in a corny and it worked very well ....sometimes while cleaning casks at work I occasionally find them left inside the cask, think I have 3 now

Save cutting the dip tube could you not just use a spare gas tube?

Ahh I see what you mean, yes a gas tube might work well ;)

I just cut mine here...so no going back, doubt i will need to however.

Yeah, I'm going to use a spare gas tube, at least at first. Seems a shame to butcher a full-length tube: there might be times when you don't want to use the float.

I have 3 x cornies with the caskwidge float mod, i ebayed 3 x gas dip tubes and exchanged them for the long product dip tubes, the caskwidgered floats are sold with the ideal length of silicone tube, its an expensive way to buy silicone but theirs is formed with a ridge pattern to i think allow more flexibility by cutting down the total thickness ??

the gotcha is that the floats will not always float up with beer when filled, some keg shaking can sort this but the simple soultion is to attach the float and then pull it out of the lid hole and sit in a bowl of sanitiser while you fill and drop it in to float when full..

yes they work in that you can pull a green pint clearer earlier and you dont loose 1/2 a pint to keg deposits on the initial pour, the float will wedge in the bottom when empty leaving a little more residue at the end so you still have that 1/2 pint waste just at the end of the keg not the start ;)

in practice i tend to leave kegs to mature long enough for the benefits to be negligable so have not modded any other kegs,
ist update for months n months..
Fermnting: not a lot..
Conditioning: nowt
Maturing: Challenger smash, and a kit lager
Drinking: dry one minikeg left in the store
Coming Soon Lots planned for the near future nowt for the immediate :(
