Noxav Pump - Flow Rate question

Post by AceMcAce » Mon Aug 08, 2016 11:28 am

Hi All

I run a Novax 20M through a plate chiller to cool my wort down for pitching, but I'm struggling to get it cool enough as quick as I'd like.

Does anyone know if it is possible to control/alter the flow rate on the novax pump so I can run the wort slower than the water and chill better?

I'm open to any ideas.

Many thanks

I know the 20b can be restricted by putting a balls valve on the outlet..

I have a M20 and M25
this fits on the M20 and can control the flow

The M25 i just use a ball valve

Some pumps can be controlled by a simple valve offering restriction on the outlet, but many don't like it to be taken too far (those with a magnetic drive are usually best for that method, as the magnetic coupling can slip, allowing the impeller to slow without the motor being overloaded).

If it is a pump that doesn't like to be controlled by restriction, you can make a bypass loop with a valve in. So the flow through the pump is maintained partially by wort going from outlet back to inlet instead of it all going through the chiller. A bit more pipework to clean, but it won't overload the motor.

Another approach may be to recirculate through the chiller back into the boiler until the initial wort temperature is low enough that the chiller can cool enough in one pass.

The Novax 20 M & B only differ in seal types afaik.

As it's a centrifugal pump it can be safely throttled with a ball valve on the outlet.
