Just out of interest how much would you be prepared to pay for a 50 litre one of these as sold by several HBS.

I recently paid £110 for a H&G own brand 50 ltr ss mash tun.

How much would I prefer to pay.....up to £75 quid for the same quality item, but when Catering Direct can get me a 50 ltr stock pot, be them thinner material, for less than £50 to my door, it's hard to justify the extra cost.

All examples above exclude ball valve.

You can use the SS wine fermenters that come in at €100ish for 100L with a ball tap(you may need to change it for a hot water one for €5). One of the members on the forum does this, I will be giving it a try next year.
A good gas burner will set you back about €25-35 with a cast iron legs and supports from a hardware store, makesure they are onepiece as there are spne shoddy ones knocking around though if you a good hardware store they should point you in the right direction

Funny but I've just bought one of those 70L thermoboxes as a new mash tun. Shiny.

hey steve, ive been looking at those as well. 70l with tap.
how big a batch do you think that size is good for as a mash tun?

Depends on your mash thickness and what you brew. I use a thin mash as I use a pump to recirculate so a 1.050, 20L mash would take up 20-25L. So I'd get ten gallons out of that vessel comfortably. If you use a thicker mash you'd get rather more.

I can quite easily pour 23L of beer down the drain and have several times if a brew doesn't turn out how I want it

By thermobox do you mean the insulated food containers?

One of these

Incidently I haven't thrown one of my own beers away in quite a while. I've thrown a couple of commercial ones away (the last being a Milk Stout from Malta called Lacto)

Ooh! That is shiny! Do you use a manifold or false bottom in that?

I'm going to try it with a Bazooka Screen to start with - if that doesn't work I'll build a manifold.
