Post by john luc » Tue Dec 06, 2016 2:18 am

My wife wants to buy me a microscope, (she just doesn't know it yet  ) so with that in mind I have being trolling through the many choices out there. Has anyone got a recommendation for one. I deffo like those that can be plugged into the PC,like this one,

I wouldn't recommend one of those, TBH. Got one for my daughter a couple of years ago. I sent it back for a refund after a few days. All I can say is it begins with 'F' and ends with shite.

Something like this is far superior, despite being cheaper. You can connect most microscopes to a PC using a specifically designed camera that fits into one of the eyepiece tubes.

Thanks for the tip, given that the one you linked to does not have a camera what about this one. It has a camera with it,

The one I linked has 3 eyepiece tubes and it comes with an optional camera that connects to your PC (not Mac, unfortunately) via USB. Easy to capture good quality images. I'd recommend it, as I'm very happy with mine :D It has the added benefit of allowing you to view by eye or on screen without swapping the camera and one of the eyepieces. The camera is quite good and it comes with a software disc.

So it does come with a camera for that price. I was not sure from reading the add.

Having another look I think that you have to buy this one to add to it,

Yes, it's an optional accessory with an additional charge. The pics are a bit misleading, you only get a small black tubular camera.

You might be able to pick up an oldish trinocular Olympus microscope from fleabay.

I bought an Olympus BHM (which is a metallurgical microscope, rather than biological) for around £300, but I bet there are biological
ones for similar or cheaper price. I can attach my DSLR to that.

There was a long thread about microscopes a few years back -- might be worth a look.

I bought one and played with it a few times and then put it away in the cupboard. It was fun, but I can't really say it was useful.

Watch out for this crowd. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141936435150. This is the one I bid for and won but despite receiving lots of stuff from that part of the world this one never came. Have now got a refund but someone I know in Ebay told me that often companys will not deliver what you bid for if they did not get the real price they have. I was the only bidder at £115 and so paid for it and waited and waited and...

I have a Chinese Microscope that I bought from Brunel Microscopes many years ago. It is so old-fashioned that it would not look out of place in a Sherlock Holmes story, unlike some of his laboratory glassware, which in one TV episode, you coluld clearly see Pyrex printed on it. Nevertheless, the microscope works well enough.

I have had an Apex Practitioner microscope on my Amazon "save for later" list for a couple of years, because it seemed the best value for money as a direct replacement for my Chinese-copy thing. I went to buy it a couple of weeks ago, only to find that it has been discontinued. Story of my life! I will patiently wait to see if it re-appears and, if it does, then act more quickly than I am accustomed to doing.

I have bought a fair bit of astronomy gear from First Light Optics. They also sell microscopes and should be able to offer advice and help in choosing one. They have a very good reputation in the astronomy community.

Decided to take your advice and go for one of these along with the minigrab camera. Got messed around by the Indian crowd so much that I will not be buying there ever. The fact that they take your money and lie through their teeth that they sent it. Complained to Ebay as I was told to do.
