PH Meter Calibration
PH Meter Calibration
How often do people recommend calibrating their ph meter? I got an Omega PHH-7011 for Christmas and am planning on using it for the first time tomorrow. I have two small bottles of buffer solution and have realised it's relatively pricey to order more from Omega so would rather not calibrate more frequently than is necessary.
This sort of leads me onto another question which is: does it matter what buffer solution I use (as long as it's the correct ph)? I'm wondering if it would be fine to order some from somewhere other than Omega, if I can find it cheaper?

Stay clear of the powder mix your own stuff.
Basically pH fluid is we just that pH fluid.
Some manufacturers do calibrate at slightly obscure(ish) values in a bid to make you buy their own solutions.
Check our fish stores etc.

I tend to check mine every 6 months or so.

I do mine every brew. It might seem excessive (every two weeks, on average), but it's usually a little out when I test it. That might say more about my meter thoughDennis King wrote:I tend to check mine every 6 months or so.

Mines the opposite every time I've tested it it's still spot on.Matt in Birdham wrote:I do mine every brew. Re: PH Meter Calibration
As always it is going to depend. When I was doing some lab work at uni, we actually had to calibrate the meter between every reading. Personally I calibrate my meter each time I brew, buying the calibration solutions in 500ml bottles is a lot cheaper that tiny bottles, and they are available quite cheaply from eBay

I do the same. The amount used is small and depending on how often you brew could last up to a year. An accurate reading of pH at all stages of brewing can help guide some of the choices you have made and how you use the information in the future.Aleman wrote:As always it is going to depend. PH Meter Calibration
What are you all using to rinse the probe between the buffer solution tests, as I assume you're using 2 or 3 strengths?
And where do you buy your probe storage solution?
Thanks

I bought a storage solution, ph of it is about 3-4 not sure it's deionised water tbh?

Re: PH Meter Calibration
I use a nozzle end squeezy bottle full of distilled water to rinse. Storage solution I bought from a hydroponics shop. I tend to calibrate every brew- it's so quick it makes sense to do it each time.
Re: PH Meter Calibration
Looks like the storage solution is KCl in distilled

Re: PH Meter Calibration
Thanks for the replies guys.
I'm just adjusting my water for my brewday today and I've calibrated my pH meter for its first ever use. I'm finding that when I'm trying to measure my waters pH the value will sort of settle on a figure but then it keeps gradually creeping up by about 0.01 and doesn't seem to stop (unless I need to leave it even longer?). Is this normal behavior?

Re: PH Meter Calibration
Why are you measuring water pH? Its pretty much irrelevant. My understanding is you want to keep the meter constantly moving in the solution. Could it be the water is warming up and that's causing the drift? All measurements should be at 20 degC.
