I've never felt the need for one but I know lots of you like the idea of these. From Thursday 19th Jan Lidl are doing a hand held infrared thermometer for £12.99. The leaflet says
3 sensitivity levels - +/- 0.5 or 3 or 5.5 degrees
-50c to +380c
can be set to C or F
lcd display which changes colour according whether your reading is warmer or colder or matches the reference temp.
I've no idea if this is good value but thought I'd give everyone a heads up
cheers

They are complete crap I got one just over a year ago and if was out 5 degrees measuring several surfaces vs thermopen , great as a doorstop tho
Re: infrared thermometer lidl 19/1/17
I bought one to test my central heating system and must admit I agree with Ciderhead. Over a short stretch of pipework it would give readings that varied by over 10C, depending on the exact texture/colour of the surface of the pipe. Not much use.

Handy to know, Thanks.
Re: infrared thermometer lidl 19/1/17
Well, I use one and I like it. Obviously you can't use it on reflective or see-through surfaces. But it gives accurate enough readings and it's handy to have.
Re: infrared thermometer lidl 19/1/17
Yeah these things are designed for measuring temperature on things that you can't measure safely any other way... e.g. The roof of a pizza oven or a piece of machinery that you are heating with a blowtorch... difficult to think of a brewing application really. Kind of you to share the link though OP!

fwiw i did an ad-hoc test of a collection of thermometers and meters including a basic ebay infra red thermometer.
the only thermometer that gave worse readings than the infra red was the antique cooking thermometer my grandad made due mostly to the glass bulb shifting in the brass cage.
