how to make up my AG kit

Post by hairytoes » Mon Aug 07, 2006 5:43 pm

Well here goes:

Bucket in bucket mashtun - 2x 25L bins. 1 with loads of wee holes. 1 with a tap.
wrapped up in insulating stuff for boilers.

Boiler: 1x 25L bin with 2x cheapo kettle elements inserted through holes cut in the
side. 1x tap fitted as above, but with a homemade hop strainer attatched
to the back of the tap.

Sparge bucket: Another 25L bucket, fitted with Phil's spinny arm thingy + grain
straining bag + the ubiquitous tap.

Counterflow chiller: A-la the many posting here, going to ask around to get some
help to make the T bar, maybe local plumbing place.

Fermenting bin: 25L fermenting bin, with airlock (i notice Jim ain't got an airlock,
I've already got the bin & see no harm)

Storage: Kegs & bottles.

Copious amounts of tubing to transfer the liquid in it's various forms.

Well that as I can see it is my plan, what do you guys think - has it got a chance? I've probably missed quite a bit, so any pointers would be good for me. Thanks ;)

Sounds pretty good. I would up the size of the boiler (and possibly the tun) to 30L or slightly more - makes it easier/safer when boiling to have a bit of spare room. And if you intend to boil and end up with 23L/5G then you will probably need to be boiling about 28-30L to start with to account for evaporation.
Not sure why you need the separate sparge bucket? The spinny sparger can be fitted to the mash tun.

Aaahhaa, I was thinking about this too - in regards to the sparge bucket, so i can just keep everything in the mashtun, for the mashing & sparging process, then drain off the wort into the boiler to boil = then into the fermenter & that's it!!As regards to the boiler I take your point, better to be safer + I can get a better quality bucket maybe 33L.
I already have 2 buckets both 25L so I want to utilise these as the mashtun.
Just need to source a good kettle to knick the elements out of!!
Thanks!!
I'm pretty sure I can make it all up, although I don't have your engineering skills = your set up looks pretty darn nifty B) , but I'm sure mine should be up to the job, although I've still got a lot of researching & sourcing to do!! <_< , will post up some photo's just for the fun of it, but that's some time off yet!
