Hop Spider support suggestions.

Post by 46philh » Fri Mar 24, 2017 5:35 pm

I have one of those metal hop spiders that hangs over the edge of the boiler like this one...

It leaves a gap on my lid which lets lots of steam out the gap.

Don't really want to drill more holes in boiler and the idea with it is I can put in HLT is say the Boiler elements goes mid-brew or something. Maybe cutting the lid would work but I doubt it. #-o

Any ideas ?

Loop some heavy duty elastic bands together and use it as a bucket handle on the hop spider. Turn the hop spider around so the metal bars are pointing inwards then lay the elastic band "handle" over the edge of the boiler and stretch it under the handle of your boiler.

I hold my dairy thermometer in place a bit like that.

If vacants lazzy bands stretch too much try the same with cord, if still no good try splitting silicone tube and pushing that onto the pot lip to raise it a couple of mm
ist update for months n months..
Fermnting: not a lot..
Conditioning: nowt
Maturing: Challenger smash, and a kit lager
Drinking: dry one minikeg left in the store
Coming Soon Lots planned for the near future nowt for the immediate :(

what they just said gave me an idea.. if you had the big silicone tube , say 21od 12id and slit it down the middle to the length of the exact circumference of your pot and put it over the rim (pipe lagging style) and notch that??

Thanks. I know someone who use those silcon grade elastic bands for cooking so might have to borrow a few and try that

Those Amazon bands look quite thick. I'm using the elastic bands the postie drops around the letterboxes  . Thinking about it, I guess fishing line of strimmer line would be strong enough and so thin that you'd get less steam escaping.
