Bottling from primary

Post by stringy » Wed Aug 23, 2006 4:45 pm

I currently have a brew that is in the primary & is destined to be bottled. However I dont currently have any room to but it into a secondary fermenter. It has been in the primary for a week, but in dont know how long to leave it before bottling. I dont want bottle-bombs, but I have heard that leaving it too long in the primary may cause problems.
Any help wouild be greatly appreciated

Greater than 3 weeks is getting into dodgy territory for leaving beer on the trub. The temperature plays a large part though and if its stored cool enough (below 20C) it may last a lot longer. Personally I'd leave it until it is mostly clear, and this may depend on yeast strain and fermenting conditions.

I have bottled straight from the primary a couple of times. I've left the beer in for about 3 weeks. This was in winter though and the yeast was not very flocculent. If it looks pretty clear I'd bottle after 10 days.

Cheers guys!

If I bottle after a week, then should I use less priming sugar, if any??
I dont want to end up with over carbonated beer!!

I bottled straight from the primary after 10 days and used 1/2 a tsp of glucose ;)

It will more than likely be finished fermenting after 7 days unless you were using a strange yeast or fermenting cooler than about 18 C. Go ahead and bottle and prime as normal.
