Stainless Fermenter
Stainless Fermenter
Could anybody recommend any stainless steel pots like the ones commonanly available from France to make into a fermenter..
Have seen that Brew Builder sells ready made stainless fermenters, but buying one will take all the fun out of it.
Making one if i have the pot is not a problem, I have access to a workshop so can manufacture anything I need to..

Re: Stainless Fermenter
what do you want to do with it regarding addons?

With regards to add-ons..Haydnexport wrote:what do you want to do with it regarding addons?
Would probably look to add in a cooling coil, and heating with a temperature sensor to give temperature control.
Would want to have it airtight and add a pressure relief mechanism to it also.
This is all nice to haves but not essential. Would love a conical but couldn't justify the cost as buying a vanilla stainless conical vessel seems impossible.

Re: Stainless Fermenter
I'd go for a standard pot then, brewbuilders cheapest are ideal , in fact i've got one that I'm planning on doing the same with a maxi (already got one) to cool via a home made 8mm ss coil when funds allow , and have the sensor through the lid too with something like this http://www.bacbrewing.com/epages/990497 ... oducts/019 so I can move the probe op and down and i dont have to have it fixed to the lid

Sounds a great plan, interested to hear how it pans out.Haydnexport wrote:I'd go for a standard pot then, brewbuilders cheapest are ideal , in fact i've got one that I'm planning on doing the same with a maxi (already got one) to cool via a home made 8mm ss coil when funds allow , and have the sensor through the lid too with something like this http://www.bacbrewing.com/epages/990497 ... oducts/019 so I can move the probe op and down and i dont have to have it fixed to the lid
How do you plan to make an airtight seal with those basic pots?

Re: Stainless Fermenter
I'm not going to worry about sealing it , i use mango chutney type barrels now and the lids are a very loose fit no seal and all is good.

Re: Stainless Fermenter
a lid seal on a basic £25-50 33-98l stock pot from bergland etc can be achieved with poormans parafilm (ptfe tape).
odly thermopots with the silicone lid seal and 3 x lid clamps are worse to seal..
However i would question thee need and usefulness of maintaining a lid seal? why the need?

i’m using a speidel 30 litre plastic fermenter now and it’s the first fermenter i’ve used that i can actually use the airlock properly - all others have leaked through the lid. i wouldn’t say the lid seal is critical. i’ve also used a 100 litre stainless steel stock pot with a heavy book on top - that produced one of my nicest beers to date
Planning: BrewEasy system build; possibly a Wychwood Hobgoblin Gold clone
Fermenting: Simcoe SMASH
Drinking: Cascade Centennial Pale

Re: Stainless Fermenter
An author alternative...
would be to go for one of brewbuilder's flat-bottomed fermenters as a base. It depends what you want in terms of bulkheads and how you are with stainless welding, of course. But FWIW a non-threaded triclamp bulkhead can be very convenient for hygienic couplings (and open up a world of very costly triclamp attachments and fittings!)
