Small batch chilling

Post by Secla » Thu Nov 29, 2018 8:55 pm

Thinking of doing some small 10l batch’s and was wondering if anyone had any techniques for chilling without extra equipment etc.

Was thinking just putting in an ice bath but not sure how effective it would be

Ice bath is pretty effective, especially if you're able to top up the ice a couple of times. Stirring also helps and aerates a bit too.

I always make 10l batches and I still use an immersion chiller. It takes about 15 mins to pitching temp when cold outside or a little more in summer. Did use ice bath method a couple of times but vowed never again. The last few degrees I found a nightmare.

Sink, run cold water around it. Cool in no time! Not good if you have a water meter. Lol

It's about £2 for 1000 litres.

I agree though - when I used to do 10 litres I'd chill in the kitchen sink or even the bath.
Ingredients: Water, Barley, Hops, Yeast, Seaweed, Blood, Sweat, The swim bladder of a sturgeon, My enemies tears, Scenes of mild peril, An otter's handbag and Riboflavin.

one of the many reasons i gave up chilling is that it seemed like such a waste of water, even though i knew - as jocky notes - it wasn't a financial issue.. chilling 10-12 litres in the sink used to take me three or four fill/empty cycles. that was while stirring both the water and wort opposing directions until the water was noticeably warmed.
dazzled, doused in gin..

I’ve read into no chill cubes etc. But part of the point of doing small batches is recipe testing before brewing a bigger batch. I think scaling recipe will be more difficult due to bitterness etc when switching systems

You could just make a smaller coil chiller, although they are available off the shelf too.
