Recommend me decent immersion chiller

Post by Bazz » Thu Dec 20, 2018 6:49 pm

I'm thinking of upgrading my immersion chiller in the new year, i want to stick with immersion as it's what i'm used to and i think it works best with my set up, so what's considered top dog these days?

Thanks.

I bought an imersion chiller back in 2010 it was cheaper to buy than make my own.
I bought one from Leyland homebrew, I have used it for about the last 300 brews, Cools in about 20 mins. Cant see me ever needing to replace it.

When I bought my Braumeister I got the stainless steel one that Speidel make, I was expecting quite a drop in efficiency compared to a copper one but in practice it doesn't appears so, the Speidel one is a bit more beefy so it may not be comparing totally like for like. That said, the stainless steel one is much easier to clean as nothing clings to it, unlike the copper one and for me it outweighs any small real world drop in efficiency.

Yes, the difference between copper and stainless tubing isn't usually much in terms of efficiency. Whilst copper has a much higher thermal conductivity, this is largely negated by the wort itself, which isn't anywhere near so great. So moving the wort over the IC coils (by gentle stirring or recircuation) is much more useful. Especially as the wort cools; the reduced temperature differential between wort and coolant/water means heat transfer gets ever slower.

In addition to wort movement, the best design of IC somewhat depends on your water pressure and flow rate; sometimes longer coils might be an improvement but certainly not always, sometimes parallel/multiple coils might be more effective. Do you happen to know in what way the current IC is lacking?

Hi

I built an immersion chiller using 10mm copper and formed three roughly equal lengths but different diameter coils and connected them in a 22mm x 3 manifold. Then used a 22 x 15 MM. reducer on each end to connect to the hose pipe. Didn't take long to make and cools 24/25 litres of boiling wort in about 7/8 mins (depending in ground water temp).

Trying to post pics but not sure how...

Well, sort of got pics to work. I did a rough calc of how many coils each size would need to be about equal length. When I'd made all 3 of them up I did a flow test through the manifold and aggro were all within 10% of each other. And it works well in practice.

The problem with the chillers from Jaded is that by the time you add shipping and tax you'll pay double the original price.

Will build my own in the new year.
Ingredients: Water, Barley, Hops, Yeast, Seaweed, Blood, Sweat, The swim bladder of a sturgeon, My enemies tears, Scenes of mild peril, An otter's handbag and Riboflavin.

It cost me under £20 to build mine. 10m of copper pipe was about a tenner, then some jubilee clips and a few metres of 10mm hosepipe. I wrapped the pipe round an old tin of paint. Took about half an hour to make.
