Pump around to £100 mark
I'm looking for a pump, the main use will be to transfer cooled wort to a fermenter. I've been looking at the Angel homebrew Diablo and the malt Miller pump. Both look fit for purpose and I like the idea of being able to control the flow with a ball valve. Has anyone had any experience of either of these pimps? Or, have you got any recommendations of something similar up to £100 - max head would only be less than 2m. Thanks

i have a pump similar to the angel and malt liller , I also have 2 march may's , if i was in the market for a new pump it would be the blichmman riptide , for sheer ease of cleaning, it is however £190 so a bit out of your budget . in fact im going to order 2 conversion kits for my march's.

Re: Pump around to £100 mark
I've got on well with the malt miller's pumps so far. They seem superior to many of the slightly cheaper ones and are quieter than the more powerful chuggers and march Mays.
As you say, they don't have very large head ratings, which is a factor for resistance (narrow CFCs, airlocks etc) as well as height. I don't believe they're easy to control speed electrically. And their (induction?) motors should be reliable but are fairly large for the power. But those things often don't matter, so if Ok for your application then great.

You can feather the speed a little as I do but if you go too slow the coupling slips.
It’s better to throttle the outlet as they will run on a dead head all day long.
Induction motors are super reliable if used within their spec. Nothing to wear out apart from bearings really.
The Blichmann is the one to have, I’ve converted my 2 chuggers.

I ended up ordering a keg kingdom 3000 - Malt Miller, Angel and Keg Kingdom all looked identical.

I’ve got 2 chuggers if anybody wants one.

What was the conversion you did to your Chugger pumps?

Hi Wally,
The Blichmann conversion kit. Slightly better flow and a lot easier to clean.

Re: Pump around to £100 mark
Its a shame that kit wasn't available a little while back, when I needed to replace the worn head on my March pump. Oh well, I suppose it is double the price of a standard replacement, so temptation averted.
Actually, on that subject, it may be worth mentioning: the march pump is helpful for pushing wort through the long narrow CFC and no doubt the upgrade would be even better. BUT anywhere that low pressure is sufficient (which is mostly, in my case) I much prefer the malt miller's mag pumps; their quietness is a vast improvement in my confined flat, and (being less OTT) they don't need throttling back so much. So horses for courses, it isn't just down to budget and cost.
