Well I never have a problem with cooling as I take my measurement after the wort has gone through the CFC and is already at or about 20C. I never bother with pre-boil gravities. But you're right, if you take, for instance sparge gravities then the refractometer certainly comes into its own.

Update: the supplier sent me a new digital refractometer which works fine. None of the problems of the original one. Super easy to use and a nice clear readout.

Much better than my optical one. It reads the same but is tons easier to use.
