4408 stainless steel

Post by guypettigrew » Mon Apr 05, 2021 8:41 am

While sorting some stuff out I came across two 1/2" hose tails saying 4408 on them.

Despite lots of Googling I'm still unclear whether 4408 SS would be OK for brewing purposes. It's clear 316 SS is good for food/brewing use, but although I've found stuff saying what 4408 SS can be used for, I can't find anything saying it shouldn't be used for food/brewing.

Does anyone know?

Thanks.

..........oh alright then - yes they are fine. As is plastic and copper.

Test: Are they magnetic?

Its composition is very close to 316 so it appears to be the "cast" version of 316 so it should be fine, just more easily broken - make sure it doesn't say PRC on it.

316 v 4408

Thanks for the link WB. I didn't manage to find that. Yes, very similar materials.

It doesn't say PRC, but it does say 12.7 PH16 R660P. Whatever all that lot means!

I don't know what I mean! All I know is it says 4408 on one of the flats. Not 1.4408.

Plus, when I pick it up it smells horribly metallic. Probably won't use it.

Test it.. Are they magnetic?

This would show there is an elevated ferrous content. And although its still OK, not the best stainless. Even prone to rust spots.
