Wheelers Wort Works

Post by clarets7 » Mon Aug 22, 2022 10:29 am

Just went to install it on a new laptop and my anti-virus has blocked it as a threat: - "wscript.exe has been blocked". That was trying to create the desktop shortcut. Is it safe or has the program got a virus?
Edit: just checked on the old laptop and now that won't run, 'cx_Freeze: Python error in main script'

If you have the original installer I doubt it.

Old code often uses methods that by modern security standards are considered vulnerable to attacks, so this sort of thing happens.

To fix.

Pause the av.
Install.
Configure the av to ignore it (exclude)

If your are concerned you could run it in its own vm, but that is a bit fiddly/overkill.

I've used Graham's calculator for years along with the BrewMate software but both have their quirks, so I'm just going to knock up a spreadsheet just to work out the basics. I tried some of the other software but just far too much hassle and none of it is as accurate as they would like you to think.

Nicely put.
I don't use software for those very reasons. I also think your brain will learn more.... Rather that just "sat nav" it.

But I do use Brewers friend for the odd ooer type stuff.

And who doesn't love a spreadsheet 😁😁

Are you talking about the Beer Engine software? I've not heard of 'Wort Works'.

EDIT: Graham's last ever version of the installer is available on JBK from this page - https://www.jimsbeerkit.co.uk/extras.htm .

EDIT 2: Advanced senility is obviously setting in - please ignore my ramblings and go to that page for Wort Works.

EDIT 3: the Chrome (or possibly Win10) downloader flagged the file as 'not commonly downloaded and may be a threat', but Windows defender shows the unzipped files as clean from viri.

Before I moved across to Brewfather - and before I found JBK - I found this site: https://www.yobrew.co.uk/beer.php

From which I downloaded his excel sheet. It was certainly useful and enabled me to create some decent extract beers and also AG beers.
