Corny leaking

Post by louthepoo » Tue Nov 13, 2007 9:42 am

I filled one of my cornys with Hooky street and the next day the top of it was wet, it seemed it had come out of the lid, i took the lid off and refitted and it still leaked out  How do you know if its sealed? or hows the best way to seal a corny?

Is the corny very full - odd it should come out of the lid. Generally the best way is to loosen the lid, waggle it whilst closing and then a blast of CO2 to seal. You can use a little soapy water to check for leaks.

Don't over fill it!!

I boil the lid and O Ring for a few minutes which helps to soften he ring. Then I fit the lid and blast it with 60PSI, which generally seals the lid no problem. I use this to push out the No rinse sanitiser, (or a lot of it), Then I set a more sensible pressure on the reg to get rid of the rest of the sanitiser and purge the keg.

Its definitely not overfilled, its the same level i always fill at - about an inch to 2 inches below the gas in tube (unless that is too full)

Unfortunatley i haven't got my gas system yet so i cant pressurise it.

I've wiggled the lid around when i've fitted it too.

I'll just have to wait for the gas system and test it then, flat beer for christmas then :(

You kind of need the gas system to create enough pressure to create the seal, the CO2 released by natural conditioning is to slow and just tends to slowly leak out. What i've read others do when in this situation is use slips under the feet of the lid, ie pushes the lid up tighter and might give you the seal you need.
Good luck with it LTP.

A cornie without a gas system makes a nice ornament, but that's about all

do you know if it holds gas? If there is beer on the lid is your beer post tight or the poppet sealed properly?

Just ideas

Wouldn't be condensation would it?

Where do you store your keg?

The temps. are all over the place at the moment.

I've noticed wet surfaces on some of my tools in the garage and have been quickley putting them away.

I dont trust any of my kegs to stay sealed unless i presurise over 10psi.
even then i still have to put washers under the feet of the lid on 1 particular keg.

i blast a good dose of co2 in then smack the lid a few times with the heel of my hand, that usualy does it .without the pressure you wont get a good seal

not unless the condensation is black and smells like the beer inside the keg

the kegs in my kitchen at the moment.

i can get someone to drill holes in the lids so i can fit 230 connectors but i dont know whether to get the widget thing or the bigger C02 cylinder :?

Its the one that keeps looking like a good idea. Where do you get them from?
