Iodine

Would it be possible to make up a solution for sterilising using elemental iodine? If the answer is yes what amounts of iodine and water should I use? Thanks in advance for any help.

Elemental iodine is actually not very soluble in water - but it is very soluble in a solution of potassium iodide (forming the triiodide ion). But it means you need to get your hands on some potassium iodide, and thenm work out the concentrations required - in fairness, it's probably less hassle to buy a bottle of Brupaks iodophor or Videne antiseptic solution from Boots (500ml = £4 I think - dilute at 1.25ml/litre; lasts for ages).
