Barrel lid removed during conditioning :-(

Post by Tallpaul » Mon Aug 31, 2009 3:36 pm

Hi all,

[ :!: Beware newbie alert :!: ]

I've just registered with the forum and would like to ask your advice relating to my 2nd/3rd batch of bitter. I recently bought a Youngs Starter kit and brewed up my first batch of bitter for around 20 yrs. To my surprise it was great :D so I bought another 2 barrels. My plan is to have one batch conditioning, another maturing and the last one for drinking. This time I tried some Coopers Best Bitter, replacing sugar for 1Kg of Burton Bridge Beer Enhancer. I also switched from the bulb style gas cannisters to an S30. Unfortunately this is where the problem started. When I screwed the S30 to the barrel valve it didn't release the gas, but it did undo the nut holding the valve in place #-o . I figured the barrel's seal was now broken so removed the lid, tightened the valve and sterilised it before replacing the lid.

:?: Should I bin a batch of bitter if the barrel's lid was removed and replaced during the conditioning stage?
:?: How do I tell if it needs chucking?

Cheers in advance

Paul

Welcome to the forum Paul.

Don't bin it. Recharge the barrel with a little C02, let it settle (it's heavier than air, so it will form a protective blanket over the beer) then vent the barrel, recharge and it will be fine.

You will know if it needs chucking.
