Demijohn Water scale

Post by Chris77 » Sat Sep 19, 2009 3:30 pm

Been an idiot and left a demijohn with about 3inch of boiled water in it with and air lock to stop dirt, I then forgot about it and now 6 weeks later emptied it and I have loads of particles stuck on the inside and a ring where the water level was, have tried scrubbing with a bottle cleaner but no good also left with VWP clenser but not shifted.

What can I use that will clean it that will not leave and after taste.

There's nothing stopping you giving it a serious bleaching so long as you rinse thoroughly, giving it a final rinse with some Sodium Met solution will neutralise any Chlorine left from the bleaching. :)

If it's really just scale then you want some citric acid in warm water. A packet of descaler from T*sco's is about £1.30 which gives you 70g of citric, or you could get 1kg for about £4.50 from your HBS. I'm not sure that bleach will shift limescale. Don't pour boiling water into a demijohn...
