Iodophor or equivalent in a big bottle

Post by fivetide » Sat Feb 13, 2010 1:56 am

I love iodophor. Yes it's an annoying orange colour which stains, but it's also reassuring and has never let me down.

But it's bloody expensive in those little bottles.

Can anyone tell me where to source it in gallons or at least better than the tiny bottles from H&G etc..?

Thanks.

Jeez! How much of it are you using?
I brew lots and I've used about a quarter of a litre in a year.

I use a couple of bottles each season I guess, and it's quite pricey including post and packaging. I also have friends who get through a bottle or so a year. I buy other cleaning fluids in larger packages and break it down fir convenience and just wondered if it were available.

According to the supplier website Videne is only available in 500ml bottles:

http://www.videne.co.uk/videne.html

They do mention boxes of 12 500ml bottles so there might be some advantage there.
They say you can order direct off that website so give them a call and see if they will deal with Joe Public: 0113 287 8339.

Just out of interest, how much are you paying for a bottle at the moment?

However, to answer the OP's question . . try looking in dairy suppliers (Yellow Pages) as Iodophors have been used as a teat wast in teh dairy industry for years . . . . You want the One that does not contain lanolin :D . . . The one trade name I can recall is BTF Iodophor . . and it was available in 5L containers

Brupaks iodophor is an acidified iodophor solution, which means you need less to get a better effect. You could phone Clive at Brupaks and see if he'll sell you a bulk quantity. There are legal restrictions for individuals purchasing large quantities of Iodine solutions (Of any kind!) because it's used as a catalyst in 'meth production.

Patsy at hop and grape, for example, has to report an individual who purchases too much (as well as certain other products).
