Star San bottle damaged in post - still OK to use?

Post by dral » Tue Apr 27, 2010 12:25 pm

Hi all,

I received a bottle of Star San today but Royal Mail had managed to drop it and somehow break the cap (not the shop's fault by the way - it was well wrapped in bubble wrap and had tape declaring "fragile" all over it). Royal Mail had stuck it in a plastic bag with a stock apology and not even bothered to tape the cap up, so the contents just leaked all over the inside of the plastic bag  .

Anyway, does anyone know if the Star San that's still in the container will be OK to use bearing in mind that it's possibly been opened for several days, or does the container need to be kept sealed?

Thanks in advance,

Al.

Must be a problem with the caps, I over tightened mine and it shattered. I ended up chucking it as I couldn't find anything to put the StarSan into.

I've had a StarSan lid crack - I transfered it to a Nalgene bottle and it did it as well. I think it's possibly the acid that weakens the lids.

You'd think the manufacturer would have figured that one out.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I've just made up a batch with tap water (soft Yorkshire water), and the pH is under 3.5 and the solution is nice and clear, so everything's fine there (thanks for the advice Chris).

I also emailed The Home Brew Shop (http://www.the-home-brew-shop.co.uk/, for it is them I bought it off) to let them know that Royal Mail were being a bit rough with their packages. Anyway, I received an email to say they'd send me another bottle out, but before I could reply to say it wasn't necessary as it wasn't their fault and I'd managed to save a good portion of the contents anyway, they'd posted the replacement! So, thanks to The Home Brew Shop - customer service well beyond the call of duty on their part, and a future customer in me!

Cheers,

Al.
