Easiest way to wash bottles?

Post by razer » Sun Apr 11, 2010 1:04 pm

I see there are a few threads on bottles at the moment, ive finally collected enough (or should that be drunk) bottles to do another lager brew. Stupidly i didnt rinse any of them out over the months of collecting them. Ive just tied them up and noticed that some of them have some mould growing in the bottom.

I asked about a bottle washer? when i picked up my draining tree yesterday from the LBS but they didnt have anything. So whats the best way to get them clean again.

Just seen a thread on here that mentioned soaking them in sterilising fluid for an hour and then running them on a wash through the dishwasher, does the dishwasher actually get water inside through the small opening!?

Any other tips?

I get quite a few off friends with mould at the bottom my method is a bit time consuming but basically i soak for a few days in bleach solution then when the wife is out i soak them for an hour in mad hot water in the bath with some washing up liquid, after the hour i give each bottle a vigorous shake with a bottle of the water then rinse three times with cold water, night before i bottle i sterilise in bleach water overnight.
As i say time consuming but never had a problem and with the ipod on its quite theraputic.

Even if you get a bottle washer I wouldn't use it to wash out bottles with mould in - it doesn't have a large amount of water in it and recycles this around, great for sanitising, not so good if you've got grotty bottles.

When I had a rogue mouldy bottle the other day I ended up having lots of mould floating in it  - chucked all the solution, was worried that otherwise I'd end up contaminating all my bottles.

I'm sure I saw something that fits on a tap and jets water up into the bottle somewhere.
