Re-using sanitiser

Post by Wooderson » Wed Jul 14, 2010 5:57 pm

Hi, I was wondering if sanitiser loses it's strength after a while.Say I fill up an FV and dunk some bottles in and after a while pour the solution out of the bottles and back into the FV,will it be ok to do more bottles with this solution?

Thanks

It's OK within reason and depends a bit on the sanitiser.

My usual routine is to fill the FV with a bleach solution the day before a brew. On brew day the FV is now sanitised. I then fill my bottles from the FV full of bleach and screw the caps on (they are PET) The bottles then remain full of solution until the brew is ready to go in them. I then empty the bottles into a bucket and use the solution to rinse the FV before storage.

Very much depends on which sanatiser you are using, but I'd be quite sure that any sanatiser would be fine for what you have suggested.

I use StarSan and if it's made with distilled water it can essentially last indefinitely (as long as it's not cloudy and he pH is right).

Thanks, I wasn't sure if it would weaken after a few goes.
