Hi,
Not started first brew yet and already confused!
When doing bottle Sterilisation how long does the solution need to be in contact with the bottle ?
I was intending using vwp steriliser
I watched this youtube...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hfd7p4r ... re=channel
And it shows just the steriliser being put in the bottle and then rinsed.
I have read elsewhere that it needs to be in contacts for 20 minutes!
vwp steriliser - contact time?
Re: vwp steriliser - contact time?
I use StarSan as my no-rinse sanitiser, but that's exactly what I do (put sanitiser in the bottle then rinse soon after - not the way he does it in the video).46philh wrote:And it shows just the steriliser being put in the bottle and then rinsed.
Tip a bit into the bottle, swirl it around to ensure all the surface is covered, let it sit for a short while then tip it out - again swirling and immersing the top of the bottle in the bucket of sanitiser.
The foam/bubbles and the small amount of liquid left as the bottle drains continues to act as a sanitiser, so I do not immerse my bottles for 20 mins or the like.

Re: vwp steriliser - contact time?
I've used VWP since I started several years ago and I just give the FVs / Casks etc. a good shake with it, ensuring that all the surfaces are well covered. I'd guess that contact time is probably a few minutes by the time I've finished rotating, shaking etc. several times. Needs a good rinsing though (I give it 4 rinses) as residual VWP will taint your beer.

Don't listen to a god dam thing that comes out of 'craigtube's ' mouth when it comes to sterilising, he sterilises his tubes, bottling stick and bottle tops with warm Tap water. . .
