SANITISING WITH A SEPTIC TANK

Post by trucker5774 » Fri Nov 12, 2010 1:26 pm

My new house will have a septic tank. I currently use bleach for all my sanitising and have had great results. I rinse down the sink to the main drains. At the new house, the rinsing will go to the septic tank, which is a no,no (yes I could drain it elsewhere) For convenience, what sanitisers are septic tank friendly?

Is it just a sceptic tank or is it a biological digester with a tank and a soakaway?
There should be no problem with the former as it really is just a tank that gets emptied every so often. The digester is a different matter.

Boingy, what you are describing is what I know as a cesspit (just a holding tank which is emptied when full) Mine is the latter one you refer to which relies on the bugs to munch the poo and the liquid is filtered through a soakaway.

At my last place I was careful to use the correct bathroom and kitchen products. The tank was only emptied once in 10 year..........even then it didn't really need it!

We are on a digester shared with 5 other houses and we were told that "normal" quantities of bleach are fine although we do try to minimise the amount that we use. I'd consider a "normal" amount to be half a cup down the toilet/sink every once in a while so you may find that the relatively weak bleach solutions used for brewing are fine. Btw, the real killer for our digester are female sanitary products so scented disposal bags are de rigueur round our way!

+1 for Boingy's comments, we're on a 4 share sceptic tank system (which is totally knackered and needs replacing!) and normal quantities of bleach are fine for them.

I reckon sanitising my FVs twice a month should be fine. We will stick to "tank friendly" products for daily household use.
