What ever happened to iodophor?
What ever happened to iodophor?
Doesn't seem like ANY shops do it anymore and I'm wondering was it a legislation thing or something?
I'm a development chemist at an oil company and one of our suppliers can source the raw material for iodophor so it will be possible to make some up for myself, but I was just wondering if anyone is aware of any reason that iodophor seems to have disappeared.

Re: What ever happened to iodophor?
There was something a while back about it being banned for use as a water purification tablet (for camping and stuff) and I think it has fallen out of favour with hospitals due to some allergic reactions but not sure about actual legislation.
If you only need a small-ish quantity then Videne is still available to order at pretty much every high street chemists, about a fiver for 400ml.
It is my preferred sanitiser (cue the naysayers....)

Re: What ever happened to iodophor?
I'm a big fan of iodophor. I've tried Starsan, and I like it too, but I just prefer iodophor. Not quite sure why though, but I just found it very odd that it seems to have largely vanished from brewing shops in the UK.
Re: What ever happened to iodophor?
I got some Videne few weeks back from boots on a special order and got into an argument about making alcohol with the pharmacist and I had to explain that you only need a licence to distill.
also I think there is a few types of the stuff one I think is a hand wash and ones Surgical Scrub about £6 for 500ml

Re: What ever happened to iodophor?
There are 3 flavours of it. You want the Antiseptic Solution.
www.videne.co.uk/videne.html
And, yes, it's 500ml not 400ml. My bad.
£6 is a bit steep though. I paid £4.30 from an independent pharmacy a few months back. You don't need a prescription but they usually have to order it, usually on a next day.

Re: What ever happened to iodophor?
Or there is Evans Vanodine FAM30 which is an Acidified Iodophor for use as a dairy disinfectant
. . .about 30 quid for 5 litres

Re: What ever happened to iodophor?
This is where it gets a bit odd:
Iodophor refers to a class of chemicals rather than the 'normal' iodophor (Providone-Iodine). The stuff that Aleman talks about is exactle what it says on the tin (or SDS rather) which is a blend of surfactants and iodine to increase the solubility of iodine in water, and some acid to increase the liberation of iodine.
The videne materials are providone-Iodine which is a complex of iodine and PVP (Polyvinylpyrrolidone, hence the other name PVP-I).
I've used the PVP-I for ages and have a (tiny) bottle myself. I'd love to know how you're getting on with the acidified stuff.
What sort of dilution are you using?
What ppm or mg/L of iodine are you aiming for?
Are you using it no rinse?
Have you had any problems?
The acidified stuff would be quite easy for me to make, and I could probably make it quite cheap, but obviously I'd like to make sure it wouldn't go off after 6 months
The PVP-I on the other hand is more difficult to make and I would need to buy that 'ready made'.

Re: What ever happened to iodophor?
I dont use it but spotted the name "Videne" at the local Farm co-op (when I was in buying feed for the hens) in the dairy/cleaner/disinfectant section.
I'm presuming it's the stuff Aleman is talking about, so I'd be interested in the how's and whys as well

Re: What ever happened to iodophor?
Be careful with that FAM30 stuff, contains sulphuric/phosphoric acid and needs care when using.
