Soda Crystals

Got some Soda Crystals today just to clean my gear. Will these be ok to use? I was gonna soak my FV with spoon etc. inside it just to give them a good clean. How much would you use for a 5 gallon FV, & do you use boiling water from the kettle?

Hi,

yes they're quite good. I tend to use about a heaped taplespoon per L, so I guess that would be around 400 to 500ml in a 23L/5gallon FV. I use hot water, but I've not tried it at actual boiling.

I don't soak for too long; overnight at most - in the past I had a deposit form on the walls when left for a long time. I may be wrong but I also seem to recall sodium carbonate meeting aluminium isn't a good thing..

Cheers

Anything I use soda crystals in, I generally run through the dishwasher on a soapless wash afterwards, just in case. I tend to use hot tapwater rather than boiling. I don't think the temperature is all that important, as long as the crystals dissolve.
