How to make up Caustic Soda

I bought 5kg of caustic soda off ebay :shock: , how do i make up a solution strong enuf to munch through brewery grime?

Not sure of the exact dilution you need but as a word of warning - it evolves a lot of heat when you dissolve it in water and don't use it on aluminium.

A strong mix is 100g per litre for drains etc. An average cleaning mix is 25g per litre. Always add the soda to the water to avoid splashing. Wear gloves etc. Don't drink the test sample!

Keep it dry in storage our the Soda 'Pearls' will fuse into one solid lump.

For real decontamination I use 100g to 1 L . . . Gloves and eye protection required!!

is that the same stuff as 'soda crystals'?
I've some and wondered how much to use too.

No Caustic Soda is Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) Soda Crystals or Washing Soda is Sodium Carbonate (Na2CO3.10H20) . . . Soda Crystals are an irritant . . . Caustic Soda is well . . . Caustic . . . much much stronger and will strip the skin off your hands used carelessly . . . making a very expensive soap in the process

As aleman says caustic is much stronger and is used in the making of soap and also bio diesel :wink:

Warning! Dont add 100g of Caustis Soda crystals to a litre of hot water quickly! Like i did :oops: Violent bubbling WILL happen and splash you!

Dont ask me how i know :(

Anyhow, i have my pipes soaking at the mo, how long should i leave them and how much rinsing is necesary?
