Easy way to clean FV?

Post by jhob » Wed Jun 08, 2011 9:00 am

I find I have to put in a lot of elbow grease with scrubbing brushes and pads, particularly around the top and the lid, to clean up my FV after a brew. Is there an easier way to get it all clean that I'm missing?

I would recommend a micro-fibre cloth, rather than scrubbin brushes and pads (esp scouring pads) cos you DONT want any scratches in your FV, Hot water and that elbow grease works just fine for me.

Hot water / Washing Soda / soft cloth . . . sorted

Steam Cleaner works well as softening the cruddy ring as well.

For the Conical I just Clean In Place (CIP) by pumping hot washing soda around through a spray ball.

I hose out the FV in the garden to remove most of the crud then fill it with hot soda solution and rinse it after 20 minutes.

I know this sounds like a silly question, but what is washing soda? Different to washing up liquid?

I normally hose it out in the garden too, I think soaking in something and then wiping off with microfibre cloth might be the way to go for me.

Soda Crystals:

Very cheap and effective and available in most supermarkets near the washing powder.

For anyone using scrubbing pads, make sure you use the white ones that are designed for non stick cookware. The green ones will tear up any plasitc surface leaving micro sratches.
I use white ones to clean my motorcycle helmet visor and there are no scratches whatsoever and even in strong sunlight.

I use the hosepipe to get off as much crud as possible and then use the 'soft' side of a scrubbing pad on those annoying bits of trub which are left behind after the hosing, then clean and sanatise as usual.

My lids have so many nooks and crannies - I just stick them in the dishwasher.

I use a sponge to clean mine.

Do any of you bother to remove the tap? I have been doing but it never wants to point straight down when I screw it back in.

Hot water, detergent and a tsp of VWP, then soak for two or three hours. There's rarely anything left stuck to the sides after that so any soft cloth will suffice.
