King Keg Cleaning

Post by fxrs » Sun Mar 04, 2012 7:03 pm

I have been given an unused King Keg which has been lying around for a wee while.

I intend to fill it with warm water to see how the seals hold up. Is it worthwhile replacing the seals as a matter of course?

The other thing I would like advice on is the cleaning of the vessel. As it has been sitting unused (with the lid on) do I need to do anything above the normal of sterilisation before I use it?

Thanks :)

Better to be safe than sorry, you don't know where it's been and what's been in it. I'd take the o-ring out and examine to see if a new one is needed, then I'd take the tap apart and soak in something strong and and sterilising before filling the whole keg up with the same stuff. After putting the tap back on of course. If it was a TT I'd probably replace the float.

Also, if it has an S30 or pin valve, check that the rubbers on that are still rubbery, and not getting hard or corroding onto the valve body. Ditto for the tap washer.

The plastic isn't completely impervious, so as mentioned do the best you can with strong sanitisers. I'd probably soak it overnight in a hot percarbonate based homebrew cleaner (or other combined cleaner/sanitiser) to remove any organic residues, and then it hit with a decently strong disinfectant; a good strong bleach mixture perhaps (at up to 50ml per L for the basics/value unscented thin bleach) for a few hours and rince 'very' well afterwards.

Cheers,
