Preparing a chill cube

Post by Manngold » Fri Mar 06, 2015 7:34 pm

Hi all,

I am trying the chill cube method for my next BIAB.

I purchased a 25l cube I plan to use. Should I oxi it and rinse, or will washing up liquid be ok? I am also under the impression that I don't need to sanitise it, as it should be so hot that it does this automatically.

Whilst on this point, should I be using washing up liquid or oxi to clean my SS Pot and heating element after a brew day?

I ask, because it was recently informed that washing up liquid can damage head retention in the beer.

Thanks for your help.

Washing up liquid taints - avoid!

Just give the cube a rinse - no chilling involved the hot wort sanitising it. But if it's new. rinse it out to get rid of any factory plastic whiff.

After a brew I just clean my pot with water.

I store a few litres of weak bleach solution in my cube. I turn it every now and then to cover all sides between brews. To get rid of the bleach - a few rinses in hot water, final rinse with a bit of crushed campden tablet if I'm feeling paranoid.
I brew therefore I ... I .... forget

Ooooo, so no need of even oxi?

Thanks for responses.

Firstly, use oxi to clean all brewing stuff and not washing up liquid.

I do sanitise my no-chill cube with Starsan before filling it. As the wort is hot it probably isn't necessary but it's so easy to do it seems silly not to. After filling the cube I press in the sides to exclude as much air as possible and then screw the lid on. Then I put it on one side for 10 minutes and then the other side for another 10 minutes. This is so the hot wort touches the whole inside and sanitises it all, again.

After emptying the cube I clean it with oxi.

Although I use starsan for most other jobs, I found quite a lot of starsan solution can get trapped in the cube due to the indentations around the spout and handle (can't seem to shake it out).

When I started out brewing kits I used bleach solution plus rinsing, then you add mostly cold tap water to make up the brew volume. I reckoned that's basically how I'm sanitising my cube, adding the boiling wort gives a reasonable standard of sanitation.

Using a no chill cube____ if it was me I'd pour in some hot. Water and swill it around a bit just to get rid of the plasticky smell--- and there's no harm to using starsan prior to running hot wort into why not it isn't hard to do. But as above I'd give it a good shake to remove as much no rinse as poss. And when you fill with wort get rid of as much air as poss...a towel on the knee is a must at this stage
Just like trying new ideas!
