I'd heard/read somewhere that bleach harms the "good" bugs. Just to clarify, I should have said that I use oxyclean to clean followed by iodophor to sanitize. Not sure what effect the iodine has on the septic tank, but it's in very small quantities.

I haven't got a sceptic tank. Just a ditch

I know quite a few round here on septic tanks, I often wondered how you would go on for sanitising myself...

As for Oxyclean, I would have thought that if it doesn't kill the bugs in the septic tank, it's not going to do the desired job on the brewing tackle.

I thought, maybe wrongly, that since a septic tank has a high biological oxygen demand, adding oxygen would help, not hinder, at the level of dilution that will occur in the tank. As Daab says, it is a cleaner, not a sanitizer, so it's not toxic to bugs.

Neighbors had professional oven cleaning people in the other day. When they were done, they poured stuff down the rainwater gully that leads straight into a stream. Before that, decorators were pouring emulsion paint down it
