Generally it involves a man climbing into the tun armed with a shovel. . . . Then a wash down (the tun not the man) with water to remove the debris.

I suspect if you ever volunteer for a day working in a microbrewery you might just get to find out, "Ah excellent. Here comes that gullible chap. Climb in here and I'll pass you the shovel"...
