Hello All
I have a bottle of Tesco Value Thin bleach. Says it contains LESS THAN 5% chlorine - could be 0.2% then!!! anyway, I am sanatising a bucket, but can barely smell the chlorine, and certainly cannot taste it. How much should I add? in teaspoons please.
Thanks
Tesco value thin bleach - what concentration please?
Re: Tesco value thin bleach - what concentration please?
Value bleaches are usually around a third of the strength of "brand" bleaches. 1.5% of available chlorine rather than 4.5%, (this is the case with Morrisons "Value" bleach) so you need to multiply the volume by 3 compared to standard bleach.MacDuck wrote:Hello All

200 ppm of available chlorine, more than enough to disinfect a bucket requires about 15 milliltres of 1.5% bleach per litre.

So Graham - what you are saying is that I need about 375 ml bleach for 25 l?Graham wrote: 200 ppm of available chlorine, more than enough to disinfect a bucket requires about 15 milliltres of 1.5% bleach per litre.
I used about 125 so hope I am OK...! although soaked for hours rather than 20 min.

Yes, that'll be fine. For disinfecting it really is powerful stuff.MacDuck wrote:So Graham - what you are saying is that I need about 375 ml bleach for 25 l?Graham wrote: 200 ppm of available chlorine, more than enough to disinfect a bucket requires about 15 milliltres of 1.5% bleach per litre.

Bear in mind that I have no real idea of how much available chlorine is in Tesco "value" bleach. I know that Morrison's "value" has 1.8% (Cos I asked them), so 1.5% is a good figure to use for calculation. Domestos has 4.9% (cos it says so on the bottle) so 4.5% is a good figure to use (It deteriorates over time).
I am assuming that Tesco "value" will be the same as Morrison's "value". I doubt if it will be any greater!
You don't really need 25 litres to sterilise a bucket. A couple of litres, a pair of rubber gloves, and a sponge should do the trick.
Don't leave glass for "hours" in a strong solution of bleach though, the caustic soda within attacks glass given enough time. Always rinse bleach from glass after disinfecting.
