Sounds like patina formed by oxidation to me. Have they had it in stock a long time?

QUOTE Copper exposed to water, oxygen, and CO2 in the air form a complex mixture of oxides and carbonates, referred to as "patina". The presence of acids accelerates the process.

You could try cleaning with vinegar and salt solution. When you place the copper in the salt and vinegar solution, the acetic acid from the vinegar dissolves the copper oxide, leaving behind shiny clean copper. The copper from the copper oxide stays in the liquid. You could probably use other acids instead of vinegar, like lemon juice.

Cheers guys - As usual you have come up trumps.

Sounds like a good idea to clean this regularly at same time as cleaning element

Hmmm...interesting thread this!!

So I take it this would be the same for when you get the same stuff on an immersion wort chiller?? Does this mean it should be treated this way every time it is used after being stored???
