I have tried Boots, Lloyds and other chemists and they have never heard of it! Has it got a full title etc.

Yep, it's known as Betadine. Ask for the aqueous version.

what's the nebefit of using betadine? is it just that it is a no-rinse cleaner? or does it have other advantages.

I have also found some to last several weeks in a sealed container. Don't know if I would trust it though...

It is only costing a matter of pence to make up a fresh 2litres everytime i brew so i dont bother keeping it to use on brewing equipment.I do put a little in a spray bottle and use it on the tap of the keg i am drinking after the last pint of the night is drawn off(if i remember  )

 Wow wish I had heard of this stuff before! I've been using WVP for ages and at a fiver a go plus all the hassle/water I've been using to rinse it properly I've spent a fortune!

Just ordered a bottle for £2.91 which will hopefully mean much less hassle/cost! :D

Are there any disadvantages/potential issues of using this over other methods?

You can also get Iodophor from online hombrew shops like Hop & Grape and Leyland Homebrew.

It's good stuff. A good trick is to use a spray bottle and fill it with water and a small dribble of Iodophor and keep it handy on brew day. You can use this to sanitize your spoons, hydrometer, FV's and whatnot.

I mix up 5ml of Iodophor with 2l of filtered water in a jug and pour that into my FV and swill about now and then for 10 minutes, drain that back into the jug and then fill up a 750cl spray bottle for use as required, every thing else i need(thermometr and hydro, mixing paddle etc etc) is sprayed with the mix or sat i solution in the jug for a while and the rinsed with boiling water from the kettle!

I have just read an Iodophor essay by Robert Arguello. He says to put 1/2 ounce in 5 litres thats (1/2) US fluid ounce = 14.7867648 ml

So that equates to 23 litres / 14.7867648 = 0.64 ml per litre

How much should we be using?

PS I had nothing to do with site even though I am a Franklin

I think that the report you have read is one of the most common results when searching on Iodophor. I have seen it reproduced on several sites :)

The basic mixture is 12.5 ppm (parts per million)

if 1 teaspoon = 5ml (which according to my measuring spoons it does)

12.5:1,000,000

or

1.25ml:1,000ml

or

1/4 tspn : 1 Litre

(I always use 1/2 teaspoon : 2 litres as 1/2 is easier to measure than 1/4 - I have a 1/2 measure spoon!)

1 tsp. in 5 gallons = 1/20th tsp. in 1 quart.

Cool, now who has a 1/20th tsp. measure? I don't, but I do have some 1 ml. pipettes. Lets see… a teaspoon is 5 milliliters and 1/20th of that is 0.25 ml. Voila! I need to add 0.25 ml. of the iodophor solution to a quart of beer to obtain the same level of "contamination" that would exist in a 5 gallon batch that had been contaminated with 1 teaspoon of iodophor solution.
1 quart = 0.9 litres (approx)

Now reading through these comments makes me wonder about my own maths....

I add 1/4 teaspoon per litre
he adds 1/20 teaspoon per litre

or I use 2.5ml he uses 0.25 ml

Huge difference.

Am I using too much? I though 1/4 teaspoon per litre was the amount (and looking, I am sure my maths IS wrong..........)

What do others use?

I haven't had any problems with sanitation (yet - touch wood)

If I've got this right 0.64 in 1 litre comes out at 1ml in 1.5 litres. Thats much easier to measure in a pipette or a 5ml calibrated syringe
