Starsan dilution??

Post by WishboneBrewery » Sat Aug 01, 2009 12:36 pm

The bottle says 1oz to 5 Gallons, will this be 1 Fluid oz & 5 US Gallons?

I only actually need to mix up 300ml and I'm feeling rather Mathematically challenged at the moment  Could anyone help??

Cheers :)

A fluid oz is actually a measure of volume IRC being the volume taken up by one oz water and 1 pint equalling 20 fluid ounces. It's an American product isn't it, it which I'd image it means their inferior gallons.

1 US gallon is about 3.79 litres so 5 is 18.95 litres
1 oz is 28.5 g so for 300 ml you'll need 28.5 *.3 / 18.95 = 0.45 grammes. You probably haven't got a set of scales capable of accurately weighing such a small amount.
Best wishes

Thats brilliant, if we think of 1g = 1ml that would be approximately half filling my 1ml syringe (I bought a few sizes of syringes as I thought they were going to come in handy sooner or later) :)

I use 1.5 to 2 mils per litre of water. I think that's about right.

It was really bugging me that the Americans had different gallons, yet their inches and pounds were the same, so I looked it up on wikipedia. Apparently, back in the day, a gallon meant different things depending on what you were measuring, so you had a corn gallon, a wine gallon, an ale gallon, a gummi bear gallon, a slightly off milk gallon and a really off milk gallon and a load of other gallons.

The Americans liked the wine gallon while the empire went with the ale gallon.

It is an inferior gallon. I thought my eyes were off when I first got to Canada until I slowly realized that my pint was slightly smaller than I was used to - and they fill the last half inch with foam.

To tell you the truth, I prefer the Klingon gallon.

It's amazing what you learn when homebrewing.
