star san is
Phosphoric Acid (75%) 50%
Dodecylbenzene Sulfonic Acid (DDBSA) 15%
Isopropyl Alcohol 10%
and some mystery ingredients which i suspect is just marketing
i can't get star san here without a heafty shipping and import duty so i want to build my own. i can find a local supplier for Phosphoric Acid and Isopropyl Alcohol but not DDBSA.
Dodecylbenzene Sulfonic Acid (DDBSA) is a wetting agent, helps break down cell walls i guess, i know nothing about chemistry! i can get this stuff:
Product Name : VR (Wetting Agent for Acid & Alkaline Baths) / วี.à¸à¸²à¸£à¹Œ 902
Other Name : -
Formula : -
Origin : Germany
Characteristics : Liquid, Pale yellow, Mild odor, pH7
do you think that would do in place of DDBSA?
thanks, steve
home made star san?
Re: home made star san?
An easier approach would be to obtain some Peracetic acid as this is what most professional breweries and the dairy industry use for a sanitizer as like Star San theres no need to rinse. Warning though Peracetic acid needs to be diluted before use
Re: home made star san?
thanks for the tip, i found a supplier for that in Thailand. do you think its as effective as a Starsan like system? how long would you soak bottles, FV's etc., in it? there doesn't seem to be that much specific use information around like you get with Starsan.
i did see this about dilution

but not much about soak time
here's a very bad translation of a product i can buy in Bangkok, sounds like it should do the trick.

Re: home made star san?
The guys at the local brewery say it works almost instantly so long as you have cleaned the item first, just dip your utensils into a diluted mix or swill round the insides of barrels etc. Be careful though its nasty stuff when concentrated!!!!!!!
Re: home made star san?
thanks, just ordered some, super cheap from a commercial chemical supply company, now i'm cooking up about 100ltrs/wine a week i need to move away from home brew shops and to commercial supplies.
thx again for the tip
