Thin Bleach mixed with soda crystals?
Thin Bleach mixed with soda crystals?
I've been searching to see if this is a big no-no. I have found that caustic soda and bleach should not be mixed but can soda crystals be mixed with it?
Will probably clean and sterilise separately anyway but wondered if both could be done at the same time?

Re: Thin Bleach mixed with soda crystals?
There will be no harm done by mixing the two, you won't gas yourself or blow yourself up, but you might reduce the killing power of the bleach by holding the pH too high. It is probably pointless anyway, because bleach has a bit of caustic soda in it, which is a much more powerful cleaner than soda crystals.quiff wrote:I've been searching to see if this is a big no-no. A strong solution of bleach is the better bet.
EDIT: Who is that bloke that keeps jumping in front of me?
Re: Thin Bleach mixed with soda crystals?
Thanks guys,
while you are there, if I was to soak the bottles overnight in a bath of bleach solution, what dilution strength do you think would bu sufficient to sterilise?

Re: Thin Bleach mixed with soda crystals?
Thanks Chris.
All 150 bottles have been sat behind the pub from whence they came for weeks so will need separate cleaning and sanitising.
Will scrub and soak in a bath of soda crystal solution overnight to try and remove the labels and sit in a bath of bleach solution at 10ml/L for an hour or so to sanitise ready for bottling Sunday afternoon. Right, sorted in my head at least
Cheers

You will probably have dried-on crud in the bottom and mould. You will need to inspect every one for cleanliness after cleaning:D
Stubborn deposits can be shifted by putting a few grains of rice in the bottle along with some cleaner and swilling it around. You will have muscles like Popeye's after 150 of them though.

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to it.....

Re: Thin Bleach mixed with soda crystals?
GREAT idea about the drop of washing up liquid in the bleach solution. I'm stealing that one!
Re: Thin Bleach mixed with soda crystals?
I need all the help I can get in this respect. I still haven't emptied my mash tun or hop trub from when I brewed last weekAnything that has been left dirty for any length of time will be a pig to clean.

Re: Thin Bleach mixed with soda crystals?
Ah! Interesting. I've been brewing for a while now, but thought that I would re-check my "a good glug or 2" measurement for the bleach and found that I probably ought to be using a bit more than I do at the moment.Chris-x1 wrote:10 ml per litre for sanitising.

I'm also going to steal the idea of putting a bit of washing up liquid in, just because the wetting agent idea makes a lot of sense.
There is another idea, in this thread, that recommends a bit of vinegar as well. What do people think of that as an idea?
Tim
Re: Thin Bleach mixed with soda crystals?
I'd like to add that adding vinegar to bleach can be very dangerous because of the Chlorine gas that can be formed.
