Bottle Rinser and Starsan

Post by Sadgit » Thu Jan 28, 2010 8:29 am

Morning.

I've just bought a Bottle rinser and drainer, so now I start the no rinse bottle game. I began to dread sanitizing my bottles for each brew :)

Is star san ok to use in a rinser? does it foam up like mad?

Cheers
Mark

Yes i does. There is a version, Saniclean, that doesn't foam though. IMO, you're best bet is peracetic acid if you can get it.

Just make sure that you don't have any copper or brass in the rinsing system if you do use Peracetic. . . . I've just used my Bottle rinser for the first time . . . and I used Iodophor . . .. It foams a bit . . . enough to prevent the bottle rinser from working for very long . . . long enough to do the job though . . . I think you'll have the same problem with star san.

Peracetic Acid is available from eBay  . . . and most farmers supply stores will be able to sell it to you

thanks.. think I will stay clear of Peracetic Acid :D

so if you use star san or Iodophor you are going to get foaming.. oh well, I only do 40 bottles at any one time, so shouldn't be a problem? Does the foam stay in the bottle?

Star San has arrived and going to make a brew in a mo.

So I am using 5 litre plastic bottle of Tesco's Ashbeck Mountain Spring with 1/4 oz Starsan. Right?

I was going to make my own RO water, as I now have a RO contracption for my marines, but wanted somewhere to store it, 93p for 5l isn't bad at all :)

Cheers

Hi Guys,
I'm just about to use star san for the first time but I don't have a rinser. If I give the bottles a good clean and rinse and then squrt the star san into the bottle with a hand spray and sit the bottles on a bottle tree to drain will this be effective for sterilising? :-k

Brilliant that Chris, Thank you.
slightly off subject this so I apologise in advance:
I noticed the video of the alkalinity test. I live in an extremely hard water area and I'm currently treating by pre-boiling, racking and adding gypsum.
My problem is that i'm getting massive evaporation in both the pre-boil and the wort boil because using one element seems too weak a boil and both elements is very fierce.
This means that i'm pre boiling 50L of liquor treated with 40g of gypsum to get 22l of beer!!!
I suppose what I'm getting too is: if I work out the relevent quantities, are there any issues with adding large quantities of crs to treat water? Can it adversely affect the final taste of the beer?
Secondly, in your videos you seem to have a good rolling boil, how do you prevent excessive evaporation?
Sorry for the daft questions but the way I'm doing it currently seems very inefficient.

I did the conversion of oz to mls (0.25 ounce [UK, liquid] = 7.103 265 625 milliliter) and I have slightly very slightly more star san, but I got that 1/4oz to 5 litres from this site :)

Someone says 0.8mls/litre and in the video it says 1mls/litre. I'm confused now

Chris-x1 wrote:It's 0.8 mls but due to it being difficult to measure 0.8mls, most people round up to 1mls (which is normally the smallest graduation on most commonly available syringes and pipettes). If you are mixing 5L at a time it makes sense to use 4 mls for economy and ensures it can still be classed as no rinse.

See my FAQs viewtopic.php?p=163644#p163644
thanks, but this says 2mls for 1L ?
"Preparation: prepare a 300ppm Star San solution by dissolving 1.6 ml (2 ml is fine) of Star San into 1L of DI/RO or water with a low carbonate content to produce a solution with an end ph of 2.5-3.5."

Chris-x1 wrote:You're quite right, the grey matter is obviously crumbling :bonk  , I wrote the FAQ and it is indeed 1.6mls per litre (or 2 mls per litre for convenience), stick with the information in the FAQs they were written when it was still in tact. (a new updated video is uploading as I type)
Phew thank god, as I used some using the 2mls yesterday :D

 I've been using 1ml/L for the best part of 6 brews and had no infections. Also using it at 1ml/L for taking samples with a syringe. Think i'll be uping to 1.6ml (I use a 1ml syringe to dose) just in case! :D Glad I read this thread!
