Problem cleaning Cornelius

Post by PEACOCKSUIT » Sun Feb 07, 2010 8:40 pm

I intended to rack my beer from my FV to my Corny yesterday. Its the 1st time iv used the corny so I left the sterylizer in it over night - 4 teaspoons young's sterilizer 10 in litres of water.

That was Friday though and its not Sunday night  . I just haven not had a chance to sort it out yet. Tonight will be the 1st chance Iv had. Its been fermenting for 10 day's so I think its well ready. Iv got a constant reading of 16 and I do think its going down any further.

I don't know if leaving the sterilizing stuff in this long is a problem. Also I didn't fill the corny to the brim as the instructions only said 10l for a 25l container. Iv sloshed the water around a lot but I don't have gas or a tap yet (its ordered and paid for and in the post) so I cant clean out the posts by flushing the sterilising solution through them. I'm worried that this might be a problem.

I will need to prime the Corny as like I say I don't have the gas yet (advice?).

Some help much appreciated.

Cheers.

I wouldn't leave sterilising solution in a corny - if it's chlorine based it could pit the stainless. Best just to clean it, rinse with fresh water and then stick the lid on. It will stay clean!

Yup, don't use chlorine based sanitisers on stainless and if you do then limit the contact time.

And you will need CO2 to seal the lid

Yeah I will wait till I can gas it which will be mid week. Regulator and tap are on the way so when I get them I'l get the gas.

Will the corny be ok though after having this stuff in it for so long? If I rinse it a lot should it be ok?

I think young's stuff I used is Sulphur dioxide-based rather than bleach based.
:?
