brupaks stay clean

Post by FUBAR » Mon Feb 08, 2010 9:14 pm

Has anyone used this i got some the other week and the instructions on the bottle are not very clear,it says to make up a solution and either spray or soak the items but dont say if any soak time is needed or if you have to rinse with water before use,and i presume as long as the items are already clean they will be sterile,I did send brupaks an email a week ago asking this but have not had a repy yet, their kits, ingreidents and equipment are top class, dont seem as if customer service is quite so good.

I have never heard of it, you could try asking a homebrew shop they are usually more than happy to give advice or even find things out for you.

Brupaks are pushing their luck a bit if they are not supplying adequate instructions with this. With the poor quality of information provided by many suppliers and shops, particularly their web sites, it is only a matter of time before someone gets a serious prosecution either under trading standards or health and safety.

Here I have cut and pasted something that I written for another purpose:

Quaternary Ammonium Compounds, quats, or QACs as they are sometimes known, have made their appearance on the home brew market recently. The first of these products to appear for home brewers is Brupaks Stayclean, although similar stuff has been used in other industries for many years. Despite the name Brupaks have applied to it, it is not a particularly good cleaner; it is a disinfectant. Items must be pre-cleaned before being disinfected with this type of product. Its major application in home brewing, according to the suppliers, is to keep vessels "sweet" for up to six weeks by using without rinsing. Thorough rinsing before subsequent use of the vessels is essential.

Quats are not broadly bactericidal, and do not attack viruses or spores. Being cationic, they will kill head retention if not properly rinsed. They are incompatible with many other cleaning and disinfection products, so do not mix them. Its major saving grace is that it is stable. That is, it can be made up and stored for later use, in a spray bottle for example, and used for routine duties. It is important that this stuff comes nowhere near chlorine-based disinfectants such as household bleach. The combination of bleach and ammonia produces a toxic gas.

Thanks for the info, think i wont bother using this then it sounds like some funny old stuff,im amazed they get away selling it with no information on the bottle because someone will have an accident with it sooner or later.

I know brupaks are in the middle of a move at the moment so I would give them the benefit of the doubt in this instance!

Just don't ever mix it with bleach!
