Brupaks Iodophor - Discontinued?

Post by Waffty » Thu Aug 19, 2010 4:11 pm

Anyone know if Brupaks have pulled this from the shelves, as just about every HBC I've look at (H&G, Leyland etc) all have this product as being unavailable?

When I last ordered from H&G, Patsy phoned me and advised that they couldn't get any from the supplier but I managed to get some from another outlet =D> , which since has run out ............ #-o

I bought my last bottle from Farnborough Homebrew Shop, but they don't seem to stock it now either.

However, they do now stock Five Star Io-Star which looks like a similar iodophor based sanitiser. :-k

I rang Brupak directly and asked why I am having problems locating Iodophor. According to the guy I spoke to at Brupaks our good friends in Brussels have apparantly decided its no good for us and have banned the sale of it. Thats the bad news.. The good news and very ironic news it is.. I just had two litres delivered from Brouwland.. based in ... Wait for it.. based in Belgium. Its the Vinoferm version. Make sense of that one if you can

I don't think the reason really is the EU (the EU and 'health and safety' seem to get a lot of undeserved blame), or if it is, it may be the formula has been made safer. I seem to remember the person at Boots telling me what I was looking for had been discontinued and replaced. From what I can remember, there are three types of iodene based product that are very similar. The one I bought is the antiseptic grade one. I'll take a look at the label when I can and post the details. I would advise you to check the rest of the forum and ask around to check to make sure I've given you the correct information. That said, I've been using it at a ration of 1.25ml per litre for around a year with no problem (though I do rinse everything after sanitising).

I began having problems a while back too - the last one I got I think came from the home brew shop but they don't seem to have it on their website unless I'm missing it.

But it prompted me to try star san instead; I realise its not the same but I have actually grown to prefer it now. Not cheap, and I use it with de-ionised water too, but it goes a long way (something like about an oz in 5L iirc) and is re-usable quite a few times.

Cheers

It's even cheaper if you use it in a sprayer - 2ml in a litre.

I've just looked at my bottle and The manufacturer is Ecolab and the product is 'Videne Antiseptic Solution'.

I have come to love Star San, I use a litre on brew day and another for kegging, so about 4.5p per L or 9p per batch. Very economical, not that I'm bothered about the cost (I would happily pay a premium for a quality ingredient for example), I just like the product. I prefer to pinch pennies by buying hops and malt from the cheaper suppliers out there.

I was told Iodophor has been discontinued because one of the ingredients has been banned from use in foodstuff.

Another StarSan fan here, used in a sprayer (as per Steve's comment above) a bottle of concentrate goes a long way!

Paul
The stuff I last bought is intended as a surgical scrub so would think that unlikely.

I believe Iodine is a pretty nasty halogen and can do damage to water treatment / waste water systems, so maybe that's why?
I love star-san too, unfortunately my tap water doesn't do too well with it so I have to use store-bought water. If you can use it, the foaming action is brilliant and it goes a really long way.

Which ingredient is that?

I usually use StarSan, but picked up a bottle of Iodophor last weekend, so I can use a different sanitizer every now-and-then. I had trouble finding 'pure' iodine, so It should also work for starch/conversion test when mashing too.

hi,

I belive Brupaks are looking at the new Biocides regulations
Putting it very simply, all biocides used in the EU must be registered. Part of this registration is proof that they work. See the REACH legislation for details.

http://www.trailspace.com/blog/2009/06/ ... o-ban.html

But i did think this only affect Water Purfication Products

could also affect Five star products.
As i think each prodct has to be registered, at a cost of £1000's each
Murphys are also worried with a lot of there stuff's
