Neutralising bleach with sodium metabisulphite

Post by cardigan » Fri Aug 20, 2010 10:06 am

Has anyone used sodium metabisulphite to neutralise bleach as suggested here:

http://18000feet.mesb.co.uk/cleaning_and_sanitising.htm

I can see the benefits of this but I don't understand the methodology: you obviously rinse your bleach sanitised kit with a solution of sodium metabisulphate but the quantity suggested is only 1 pint? I suppose it could go into a spray bottle...

Any guidance or suggestions most welcome.

Ah, if only the chap who used to run 18000feet was on this forum, he could probably answer your question.... :D

(the question is: am I on a roll?)

Ah, if only Kylie was to pop round to our house this evening, perhaps wearing some inapproriate clothing...

That picture has done nothing for my dyspepsia.

I was never suggesting using sodium metabisulphite instead of triple rinsing; I want to be certain that I have got rid of all chlorine residue. I now understand that I have to rinse in a sodium metabisulphite solution, but surely this has to be a larger volume than the one pint referred to in the 18000feet article?

Please tell me you had to google for that image and that you did not already have a copy stored away.

7.15pm and she's not here yet. I guess she will be fashionably late...

I recall reading somewhere that rinsing in hot water helps remove/break down any bleach residue better than cold.
I don't remember where I got the idea from, but if cold water is just as good, it will save me a bit of extra effort. :)

I remembered seeing it on the Sun website a couple of weeks ago

She's at home getting tarted up and swilling Pinot Grigio before she heads out...

Probably a good job. She'd run a mile if she was sober when I answered the door.
Mind you, based on that picture maybe I should open another bottle or two.
