Cleaning Demijohn After Wine Infection
Cleaning Demijohn After Wine Infection
Unfortunately, our plum wine is infected. As the demijohn it's in is made of glass, does it need a deeper clean than normal? If so, what do you guys recommend (I'm 99.9% sure the infection was introduced when I filtered the wine, rather than it being present in the demijohn)?
Re: Cleaning Demijohn After Wine Infection
The glass should clean fairly easily, its making sure all the nasty-bugs are dead that could be a problem (if it was infected).
I'd follow your usual cleaning procedure (mine is a sodium percarbonate soak), followed by a soak in an acidified-bleach solution, rinse and let it sit in the sun for a while, and then dose it with your usual sanitizer before storing it and letting it dry well. Being glass it should be possible to kill off anything that may have caused the infection but depending on how big it is you could also use heat to sterilise it.
